Factors Affecting the Elderly¡¯s Frailty among the Vulnerable Social Group

Abstract
This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the elderly¡¯s frailty among the vulnerable social group. This secondary data analysis study used the 2012 data of 1,835 participants of a home visiting service in 1 autonomous district in Seoul. After classifing into four categories, Physical health(chronic Dz. and obesity), Mental health(depression and cognitive state), Functional health(Ability of Movement, Self-care, Daily activities, Chewing difficulty, numbers of teeth) and Self-rated health, the data was analyzed using the SPSS program for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe-test and hierarchical regression analysis. Our results showed that the female(p<.001), age>75(than age<70, p<.05), having chronic dz.(p<.001), low and normal body weight(than the overweight, p<.05), having problems of Movement(p<.001), Self-care(p<.001), Daily activities(p<.001), chewing difficulty(p<.001), number of teeth <10(p<.05), the cognitive impairment(p<.05), lower self-rated health(p<.001) elderly were higher Frailty score than the counterpart. Also, having the severe-depression elderly were higher Frailty score than the mild-depression elderly, and two groups showed the high score Frailty than non-depression elderly(p<.05). The most powerful predictor of Frailty among them was depression(¥â=.259). We recommend the further developing of educational and interventional programs using these significant variables for the elderly to prevent the deterioration of frailty.
